ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Legends about Yamata no Orochi, an eight-headed and eight-tailed Japanese dragon, tell the story of the Shinto storm god Susanoo, expelled from Heaven for tricking his sister Amaterasu, the sun goddess.

After encountering two “Earthly Deities“, weeping because they were forced to give the Orochi one of their daughters every year for seven years, Susanoo transforms the 8th, soon to be sacrificed, into a kushi (“comb”) for safekeeping.

Finally he defeats the dragon and obtains the legendary sword Kusanagi-no-Tsurujiwhich came from the tail of Yamata no Orochi, along with the Yata no Kagami mirror and Yasakani no Magata jewel.
